Video Description Generator

Generate complete video descriptions for YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram — keyword-structured, CTA-included, and ready to post.

A video description is often the last thing a creator writes and the first thing they underestimate. For SEO, it's one of the three most important text fields on the platform (alongside title and tags). For conversion, it's the copy that closes the viewer who is still deciding whether to watch. A well-written description pays dividends long after the video stops trending.

This generator produces platform-appropriate descriptions in one click: YouTube gets the full SEO treatment — keyword-dense opening, structured bullet list, timestamp placeholders, and hashtag block. TikTok and Instagram get leaner, hook-first captions with inline hashtags tuned to their respective algorithms, because both index caption text for in-app search. Switch platforms to get the right format and length for each upload.

How it works

1

Enter your topic

Include keywords you want to rank for if SEO is a priority.

2

Choose platform

YouTube, TikTok, or Instagram — the description length and structure adapt to each.

3

Copy and post

Paste directly into your platform's description field. Update timestamps where applicable.

Anatomy of a high-performing YouTube description

The generated YouTube output follows the structure below. Each block has a distinct job, and the order matters — YouTube weights the top of the description most heavily and truncates it earliest:

  • Lines 1–2 (the snippet): primary keyword + the video's specific promise. Visible in search results and above the fold — written to earn the click, not just to describe.
  • The expansion paragraph (50–150 words): what the video covers and who it is for, in natural sentences that pick up secondary keywords.
  • Timestamps/chapters: unlock chapter markers in the player and can surface as jump links in Google search results.
  • Resource block: links you mention, gear, related videos — the highest-converting placement for your own playlists.
  • Hashtag block: 3 tags maximum for YouTube; the first 3 render above the video title.

The same video, three platforms, three descriptions

A description that works on YouTube fails on TikTok, and vice versa. For a video about meal-prepping on a budget: the YouTube version opens "Meal prep for the week for under $30 — full grocery list and 5 recipes…" and runs 300 words with timestamps. The TikTok version is one line and tags: "$30. 5 days. every recipe on screen 🧾 #mealprep #budgetmeals #groceryhaul". The Instagram version leads with a save-trigger: "Save this for your Sunday reset 🛒" followed by a short value list, because saves outweigh likes in Reels distribution.

This is why the platform selector exists — the generator is not trimming one description to different lengths, it is rebuilding it around each platform's ranking behavior: keyword indexing on YouTube, caption search on TikTok, and save/share signals on Instagram.

Frequently asked questions

Does the video description affect search ranking?

Yes, on all major platforms. YouTube reads the full description for keyword signals. TikTok indexes caption text for its search feature. Instagram uses hashtags and caption keywords for Explore placement. A keyword-structured description consistently outperforms a blank or minimal one.

How long should a YouTube description be?

At least 200 words to give YouTube's algorithm sufficient context, ideally 300–500 words. The first 2–3 lines are shown in search results — these are the highest-leverage sentences in the description.

What should go in the first two lines of a description?

The primary keyword and a clear statement of what the video delivers. On YouTube these lines appear as the snippet in search and Google video results; on TikTok and Instagram they're the part shown before the "more" fold. They decide whether someone clicks your video over a competitor's.

How many hashtags should I add?

Fewer than most creators think. YouTube displays the first 3 above the title and ignores tags beyond 15; TikTok and Instagram both reward 3–5 highly relevant tags over a wall of them. The generator includes a sized hashtag block per platform.

Can I use the same description on multiple platforms?

Not recommended — each platform has different character limits, hashtag conventions, and audience expectations. Generate a separate description per platform using the platform selector to get format-appropriate output.
